• The environmental enhancement agendas of large urban renewal projects may not always guarantee social equity.
• The dimensions of recognitional and procedural equity should be considered in achieving equity and resilience.
 • A tripartite framework and specific indicators for social equity are developed for the Sponge City programs in China.
